About Grof® Breathwork
Grof® Breathwork is a an experiential method of self-exploration developed by Stanislav and Christina Grof in the mid-1970s at the Esalen Institute. Built on insights from modern consciousness research, depth psychology, and spiritual practices, Grof Breathwork guides participants into holotropic states of consciousness through a combination of accelerated breathing, evocative music, and focused bodywork. This approach allows access to multiple levels of the psyche, facilitating deep self-discovery.
Essential Components of Grof® Breathwork
The Grof® Breathwork Process
Grof Breathwork is typically conducted in a group setting, with participants working in pairs. In each pair, one participant is the “breather,” engaging in the active process, while the other is the “sitter,” providing support if requested pursuant to prior agreement with the breather. Trained facilitators oversee the process, offering supervision and guidance as needed.
The setting is carefully prepared with comfortable mats or mattresses arranged for each breather. The session begins with a relaxation exercise to ease participants into the process. As the evocative music starts, breathers are guided to increase their breathing rhythm at their own pace, allowing the inner healing intelligence to lead the way. While every participant's session follows its own trajectory, most participants feel their session has resolved within 2 1/2 - 3 hours.
After the breathing session and mandala creation, participants gather in small groups to share their experiences, which helps further integrate the insights and emotions encountered.
This approach is uniquely suited for those seeking deep self-exploration and healing beyond traditional verbal therapies, supporting personal growth, spiritual awareness, and emotional well-being.
Holotropic States of Consciousness
The term "holotropic" comes from the Greek words holos (“whole”) and trepein (“to move toward”), meaning “moving toward wholeness.” Stanislav Grof, along with his late wife Christina, coined this term to describe states of consciousness that naturally guide an individual toward a deeper sense of completeness, self-awareness, and healing. Unlike ordinary waking states, holotropic states of consciousness allow individuals to access layers of the psyche that are often inaccessible, enabling exploration of repressed memories, transpersonal experiences, and powerful emotional releases.
The Grofs developed this concept to encapsulate the expansive potential these states hold for psychological and spiritual growth. Modern consciousness research and transpersonal psychology had shown that certain non-ordinary states, including those achieved through practices like meditation, shamanic rituals, or psychedelics, could catalyze healing and personal transformation. Holotropic Breathwork was developed as a safe, accessible way to enter these states, using only the natural power of breath, music, and bodywork.
